etymology: from the German poltern 'to make sound, to rumble' and geist 'ghost, spirit'. Literal translation: 'noisy ghost'.

My name is Nate, but most people on the internet know me as Bug! I'm an American illustrator and character/creature designer from the east coast.I create illustrations for themed anthologies as well as design characters for tabletop and video games. You'll notice a lot of fantasy and macabre inspirations in my work, and there's a good reason for that! Primarily, I am interested in work on book covers, promotional illustrations, visual development, and game design (especially horror themed!)I practice a wide variety of techniques when it comes to my finished pieces, and I like to explore different expressions of form and line, but most of my work includes deep, saturated colors and well defined shapes. I love utilizing a broad range of line weights and textures to create visual interest. I also really like the color orange.

THIS WORLD AIN'T BUILT FOR RUNNIN'

2020Fanart for Tango Gameworks 'The Evil Within' and 'The Evil Within 2'. Originally painted in 2015, the black painting was repainted alongside the white version in 2020.The title is a reference to an april fools day joke posted by the second games director!

THE WEDDING

2020-2023Originally created for a nautical horror anthology and a monster romance anthology respectively, these paintings depict two original characters: a sea monster and their lovely human companion.Her white bathing suit is meant it invoke wedding gown imagery, yes, but it's also a reference to Julie Adams suit in 'Creature from the Black Lagoon!

CLASSICS

2022-2023Two pieces completed for Nova and Mali's 'Classics but make it gay' anthology (volumes 2+3).The first image is a re-imagining of "The Fisherman's Wooing" by Eugene de Blass. The second image is a re-imagining of a mosaic depicting the angel Gabriel in the Hagia Sophia.

WANDER

2021-2024Three pieces of fan art, 2 of which were painted for 'The Sunlit Earth' - a Shadow of the Colossus anthology I helped organize.The first painting shows the moments before my favorite colossi fight (Phalanx). The second depicts the fight with the final colossus, and the third represents one of the final scenes of the game.

2020 - 2022Two original TTRPG characters (a mother and son duo), built for DND 5e.A college of creation bard, Cowlick is meant to be brightly colored, eye catching performer. His mother, Lady, is an arcane trickster rogue and former performer herself.

2021 - 2022Original character.Initially from a war torn country that no longer exists, Ches is a heavily scarred human with the ability to 'project' a dragon warrior from his soul in his sleep.
